Thank You, Dolly

I don't think any of us are ever really prepared to say goodbye to someone like Dolly Parton.

Hearing that she is gone is just heartbreaking. There are certain people who somehow feel like they have always been a part of our lives, even if we never had the chance to meet them. Dolly was one of those people.

She wasn't just a country music legend. She was a piece of Americana. She was the voice behind songs we've sung in the car, the woman who made us laugh, cry, and sometimes sing a little louder than we probably should. Her music has been there through heartbreak, celebrations, hard days, good days, and everything in between.

But honestly, I think what makes her passing hurt so much is that Dolly was so much more than her music.

She had a heart that seemed bigger than life itself.

She never forgot where she came from. She never acted like she was better than anyone else. And despite everything she accomplished, she continued to use her success to help other people.

She gave children books. She supported education. She helped communities. She gave to medical research. She helped people who were hurting. She quietly did so much good in the world without needing applause for every bit of it.

And then there was Dolly herself.

That big hair. Those rhinestones. That unmistakable laugh. That Southern accent. That quick sense of humor.

She could make you laugh with one sentence and then turn around and say something so genuine and heartfelt that it stayed with you.

I think that's why people connected with her.

She was real.

She didn't try to fit into someone else's idea of what a woman should look or sound like.

She was Dolly. Completely and unapologetically Dolly.

And she reminded us that you can be successful without forgetting where you came from. You can be beautiful without being vain. You can be strong without being hard. And you can have a tremendous amount of success while still choosing kindness.

That's a pretty incredible legacy.

So yes, I'm sad.

I'm sad that there won't be another Dolly song, another hilarious interview, another one-liner that makes us laugh, or another story from that incredible life.

But more than anything, I'm grateful.

Grateful that we got to live in a world with Dolly Parton in it.

Grateful for the music.

Grateful for the laughter.

Grateful for the kindness.

Grateful for the millions of lives she touched in ways most of us will never even know about.

And maybe that's the beautiful thing about someone like Dolly.

She may be gone, but she isn't really going anywhere.

Her songs will keep playing.

Children will keep opening the books she helped put into their hands.

People will keep telling stories about her.

And somewhere, someone will hear “Jolene” come on the radio and immediately know every single word.

That's a life well lived.

So, Dolly... thank you.

Thank you for being exactly who you were.

Thank you for making this world a little kinder, a little funnier, and a whole lot more colorful.

You gave us so much.

And now, it's our turn to carry a little bit of that kindness forward.

Rest easy, Dolly.

What a gift it was to have you in this world.
